Tips for Meal Planning
Weekly meal planning is one of the highlights of my week. I love being in the kitchen and am obsessed with food so the chance to sit down and think about what I am going to eat for the week is a real delight. But it's not just for fun, it's necessary in my household. Without a plan, our meal times can become quite chaotic or unhealthy. Not only do I plan the meals for the week, but I make my list for my weekly shop. which eliminates multiple trips to the grocery store. I don't have time to dig through the pantry and fridge to see what I have on hand day to day. Let's face it, by the time dinner time rolls around I am pretty exhausted from entertaining my toddler and infant all day so the last thing I want to do is come up with a plan. Not only does it save me time in the kitchen and store, it also saves money. Having a list of essentials and sticking to it keeps me from buying unnecessary things, junk food included, so I guess it saves me calories as well. Here are some simple tips I use when planning my meals.
Make it Fun
Whether it's cooking something you love to eat or trying a new recipe, plan something that you will look forward to. Research recipes, watch some cooking shows, or ask a loved one for some ideas, that way you will be more likely to stick to your plan. It will also help you to get out of any food ruts that you may be stuck in.
Check the Weather
You don't want to grill out if there's a thunder storm, and a hot stew might be too heavy for the summer heat. Plan your meals according to the weather as well as the seasons. Produce always tastes best when it's in season, and it'll be cheaper too.
Be Realistic
While it may seem like a good idea to replicate Gordon Ramsay's beef Wellington as part of a three course meal, you probably won't want to do it on a Wednesday night. Stick to quick and easy meals during the week with the more experimental cooking for your days off. Be realistic with not only what you will want to cook, but also what you will eat. Something may look good on Pinterest, but looks can be deceiving.
Don't Forget About Leftovers
I like to plan 2-3 meals per week where I know I will be cooking in the kitchen. The rest of the time we eat leftovers. It's a nice break from cooking and can be planned on the busy nights where you need something quick. Don't like leftovers? Repurpose them into something new and delicious like enchiladas, shepherd's pie, salads, or soups. My new favorite use for leftovers? Buddha bowls. Yum.
Check the Pantry
Know what you have in your cupboards to build your shopping list. This includes what spices, oils, or vinegars you may need for the week.
Pick a Theme
Feel like Chinese? Sticking to a theme will be easier on your shopping trip as well as repurposing any leftovers so food doesn't go to waste. For instance, you can make sesame tofu (or chicken for you meat eaters out there) one night, and then use the leftovers in a fried rice or lo-mein. Ingredients such as soy sauce, ginger, or any spices you buy will be used multiple times throughout the week, cutting down on cost and waste.
There you have it, by following these simple steps will help you incorporate successful meal planning into your weekly routine. Do you plan your meals? What are some of your tips?
